This is usually the first step in buying a home. Some people take the “do it yourself” approach when it comes to buying homes, but by doing so they are signing themselves up for a long, exhausting process. Why do it that way, when you could hire a professional who will make that process so much easier?
Look for someone who is already familiar with the area that you are interested in and has the experience and skills you prefer. Take your time too, because you want to find someone knowledgeable and trustworthy.
Before you hire an agent don’t forget to double check that their real estate license is up to date. This can be done by searching for the agent’s name on your state’s real estate department website.
Mortgage payments are not the only costs involved in owning a home. Make sure you include utilities, any Home Owner’s Association fees, potential repair or maintenance costs, homeowner’s insurance, cost of living in your neighborhood, and transportation costs to your monthly budget as well.
Limitless options can make it difficult to decide on what kind of home you want and which features it should have. Start out by making a list of your top requirements. This will narrow the search. Then make a list of what you could compromise on. Try to list these in order of priority. Make sure you let your agent know if any of these priorities change.
Location is indeed everything, so you will want to make sure the neighborhood your home is in is good as well. Make another list of your top priorities in a neighborhood. What do you want the atmosphere to be like? Is a short commute to work a priority? Rank these in order of your highest priority and talk to your agent about them.
